Sometime it might be of interest to unfocus the subject and show a clarity of the situation they are in...can that be captured? The places people live can tell a story too. It's interesting that the father and daughter of the subject are shadows in your photo.

Dealing with focus is tricky under the conditions I took this shot. The depth of field on a medium format camera is already pretty shallow, and I was forced to shoot with the shallowest focus possible in order to get anywhere close to a sharp image. If I could have extended the depth of field, it might have worked to focus more on the distant parts of the image, but in this case it would have left the foreground completely unrecognizable. I've played around with having the background in focus and the foreground not, but I've never managed to get a composition like that which appeals to me. I'll keep trying.
