Gates of Heaven

Belated Happy Solstice, everyone. I thought this was an appropriate image to use to mark the longest day of the year.

Shooting this was a lot of fun. I pulled out a few tricks I haven't used much but have wanted to try. The odd look comes entirely from how I captured the image rather than from manipulation afterwards. The basic exposure was very dark; something like f/16 at 1/8000th of a second or so. The bright light around the lock is the sun through a set of clouds. That produced a silhouette though, and I wanted at least some texture on the lock itself. So, I put my flash (which tends to take up room in my bag and make me wonder why I carry it for the amount of use I get out of it) on my camera in high-speed sync mode and introduced just enough light to see details on the fence and lock. I'm pretty pleased with the end result.

Ooh, I like this one. It's eerie. I see a totally different picture, depending on where I focus my eyes. Interesting. More please!

I'm glad you like it! I took a whole bunch before selecting this one to show, though they're mostly subtle variations.
